Shopify products missing GTINs or barcodes for Merchant Center

How to check Shopify variant barcodes, brand and identifier-exists evidence before responding to Merchant Center identifier findings.

Problem

Google uses global product identifiers to match products and assess listing quality. In Shopify, a barcode is stored per variant, so a product can look complete while one or more variants still lack a valid GTIN. Custom or one-off products may legitimately have no GTIN, but that needs a different identifier strategy from leaving fields incomplete by accident.

Symptoms

  • Merchant Center reports missing or invalid GTIN, limited performance due to identifiers, or mismatched product identifiers.
  • Some variants have barcodes while other size, colour, or material variants are blank.
  • A custom product has no manufacturer-assigned GTIN but is being submitted as though one exists.

Common causes

  • Variant barcode fields were omitted during manual entry, import, migration, or product duplication.
  • A SKU, internal stock code, or fabricated number was entered in the barcode field instead of a valid GTIN.
  • Brand, MPN, and identifier-exists handling do not reflect whether the product has manufacturer-assigned identifiers.

What to check

  • Review every affected Shopify variant, not only the parent product, for a valid manufacturer-assigned barcode.
  • Confirm the identifier belongs to that exact product and variant and is not an internal SKU or reused code.
  • For products without GTINs, confirm the correct brand, MPN, and identifier-exists approach for the actual product type.
  • Re-import Merchant Center findings after source data is corrected and allow for Google processing time.

Evidence to collect

  • Variant titles, SKUs, current barcode values, brand, and manufacturer part numbers.
  • The exact Merchant Center identifier issue and affected offer IDs.
  • Manufacturer or supplier evidence for any GTIN entered or for the absence of an assigned identifier.

What not to do

  • Do not invent a GTIN or copy one from a similar product.
  • Do not put a Shopify SKU into the barcode field unless it is genuinely the assigned GTIN.
  • Do not mark identifiers as absent merely to suppress a warning when the product does have assigned identifiers.

Next steps

  1. Run the free storefront check to collect public readiness signals without changing the store.
  2. Install GMC Fix Map to map Shopify catalog evidence and, on Pro, import current Merchant Center product and account findings.
  3. Apply the smallest justified product change in Shopify, then recheck to confirm whether the finding is absent.

Quick answer

What does this usually mean?

Google uses global product identifiers to match products and assess listing quality. In Shopify, a barcode is stored per variant, so a product can look complete while one or more variants still lack a valid GTIN. Custom or one-off products may legitimately have no GTIN, but that needs a different identifier strategy from leaving fields incomplete by accident.

What should be checked first?

Review every affected Shopify variant, not only the parent product, for a valid manufacturer-assigned barcode.

Need help checking this on a live store?

GMC Fix Map checks variant-level barcode gaps read-only and helps keep those Shopify-side signals separate from imported Google findings.
